Monitoring and Reviewing Your Child's Progress

Waverley undertakes a range of regular educational and personal development pupil evaluations, both formal and informal. This process is to ensure that Waverley maintains its expectations that every child  develops into a bright, high achieving, confident and happy young adult. These reviews include, but are not limited to:

Parent/Teacher Meetings 

These are available every term.

• These take place in the first half of the Autumn and Spring Terms. We discuss how a child has settled into the new term, subjects they are enjoying, general behaviour in class, friendship groups and any concerns. 
• Summer Term: an optional meeting should parents wish to discuss anything that has arisen following the issue of their child's full written report.

Report Cards with Assessment Results 

Report Cards are issued at the end of the Autumn and Spring Terms. These provide parents with detailed information of a child’s PIRA and PUMA assessment results and academic outcomes for that particular term.

Full Written School Report

A full written report is issued at the end of the academic year detailing your child’s learning, achievements, behaviour, attitude to learning and topics covered across all subjects. An optional brief Parent/Teacher Meeting will be available once reports are issued if parents have any particular aspects of the report they wish to discuss.

PIRA and PUMA Assessments 

'Progress in Reading Assessment' (PIRA) and 'Progress in Maths Assessment' (PUMA) are termly assessments that take place for every pupil from Reception to Year 6. These are standardised, curriculum-linked assessments for primary school students in the UK. PIRA and PUMA allows teachers and parents to monitor and track their child's term-by-term progress against the national average. Parents receive a standardised score, reading age and strengths and weaknesses are identified. 

These assessments take place 2-3 weeks before the end of each term. This will provide a formal snapshot of your child’s development for that term.

As the PIRA and PUMA assessments take place every term throughout a child's education at Waverley, they are also an informal gauge to help parents monitor their child's learning journey at Waverley and help everyone on the best potential secondary schools for each child.

Half Termly Read Write Inc Assessments

For our younger pupils who follow the Read Write Inc phonics system (Reception, Year 1 and some Year 2 pupils), children are constantly monitored throughout the course of their learning during their daily 50-minute lessons. Our SENCo/Head of Reading also performs more formal individual assessments on a 1-2-1 every 6 weeks. 

Pupil Progress Meetings

These are internal meetings amongst staff that take place following the results of the termly PIRA and PUMA assessments. A planned strategy is decided and put in place to target areas of improvement if required. 

'Head's Hot Chocolate'

This is an informal opportunity for children of every year group to have a breaktime hot chocolate with our Head and SENCo. This takes place every Friday for alternate year groups. This allows the Head and our SENCo to review the work that pupils have been producing and also learn more about their individual interests and achievements that they are proud of.

'Book Looks'

Each term, all subject leaders will review the exercise books and work of pupils from each year group. This is a collaborative discussion between teaching staff to share best practice. 

Pupil Voice 

Our Head, Assistant Head and Educational Governor meet with a selection of pupils each term from every year group. They are asked about what they have learned recently, if they have any concerns, what they enjoy about school etc. This helps Waverley check that our pupils are understanding and retaining the knowledge and skills taught to them. These meetings also check that children understand that school is a safe environment and that they know what to do if they need help or support.

Open-Door Policy

We operate an open-door policy. If parents would like to discuss any aspect of their child’s development at any time, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Form Teacher in the first instance.
